In this post, I will focus on the meaning behind the flags used in the International Code of Signals (ICS).
“The purpose of the International Code of Signals is to provide ways and means of communication in situations related essentially to the safety of navigation and persons, especially when language difficulties arise.”(1)
(Post continues after gallery).
The ICS is the most recent evolution of a wide variety of maritime flag signalling systems and is currently maintained by the International Maritime Organisation. Combinations of these alphanumeric symbols are keyed to the same code across languages for various standardised messages in order to easily communicate when it becomes necessary.
